London Casual Drinks Reception – tribute to James Goff (M 1975-79) Thursday 11th May 2017

The sun was shining down on us despite a dreary forecast for our lovely drinks reception at the former In and Out Club in Piccadilly in memory of our original host James Goff. By kind permission of Peter Sullings (former parent) and his OB sons Brett and Kristen who most generously hosted us our drinks reception this year paying tribute to James. Members of the Blundell’s community from the young and old, current and former parents and other supporters of the School gathered together to enjoy a convivial social evening with a delightful supper of Fish and Chips provided by one of the unique catering venues showcased in the Courtyard. Do keep us up to date with your address if you live or work in and around London even though we may have your main address elsewhere so you can be kept informed of our ‘off site’ gatherings and events.

Blundell’s Community Black Tie Dinner Saturday 22nd April 2017

Thomas Plant, OBWe were highly entertained by our Guest Speaker OB Thomas Plant an auctioneer and regular presenter for Antiques Road Trip and Bargain Hunt for our first Black Tie Dinner raising funds for the Annual/Regular Giving Fund and the Peter Blundell Foundation Bursary Award provision in April just after Easter. Thomas enlightened us to a few reflections of his time at Blundell’s and was our excellent auctioneer for the evening. We were treated to a song from current pupil Louisa Everett at the drinks reception on arrival. Members of the Blundell’s community, colleagues of Thomas’s and many our parents enjoyed the delicious meal provided by our Head Chef, Masterchef finalist Craig Sampson who treated us to some wonderful courses sourced from local suppliers. He was a major feature in our Auction prizes enabling two lucky bidders to secure his services for a private dinner for 10 in the near future. Thank you to all those members of the community who joined us for our first Black Tie fundraising event.

Blundell’s Community London Dinner at the Travellers Club, paying tribute to James Bullock OB (P 1981-86) Thursday 23rd February 2017

It was within the beautiful surroundings of The Travellers Club and by kind permission of Dominic Roughton OB (House and dates) who was also our Guest Speaker for the evening, we paid tribute to James Bullock who was involved in so many different aspects of Blundell’s and latterly before his untimely death as a Mentor for Blundellians looking to work within the legal world and a very active member of our Governing Body. I am sure James would have found it a very fitting evening to have guests from across both his school, work and personal life gathered together to enjoy a very sociable evening in his memory. Dominic both a colleague from school and their days in Cambridge together and also occasionally in the work place reminded us of a few of James’s many achievements and his joy of bringing support and encouragement to so many of those who crossed his path. Thank you Dominic and to the trustees of the James Bullock Memorial Fund most of who were able to join us for this touching evening.

Ladies Lunch February 2017

Ladies' LunchWe had another first earlier this year with our inaugural Ladies Lunch with Guest Speaker author Amanda Prowse, a prolific writer who has over 20 titles to her name. She brilliantly entertained our guests, ladies from across the Blundell’s community, we had a delightful lunch served by our Head Chef and Amanda most generously undertook a book signing giving each of our guests a complimentary copy of her latest book.

Overseas Receptions Autumn 2016

DubaiThe Autumn 2016 term brought a couple of social gatherings on our overseas trips to engage members of the Blundell’s community and bring together both Old Blundellians and current and former and prospective parents of Blundellians from Dubai and Bermuda.

In Dubai we were delighted to meet with a number of people from the community in the Dubai Marina Intercontinental YNOT bar.

In Bermuda we were very grateful to Mrs Elaine Campbell former and forthcoming parent to Isabella and Lucy Benson for her assistance in organising our reception at the Hamilton Princess where we gathered together a wide range of members of the Blundell’s Community including two Old Blundellians who hadn’t been back in touch with Blundell’s for a long time. It was lovely to see them mingle with others as if it was only yesterday that they left the Blundell’s campus.

Cricket Reception at the Ted Crowe Room, Somerset CCG September 2016

Members of the Blundell’s community joined together for a day of cricket at the end of the season to see a day of exciting cricket with our Old Blundellian Dom Bess popping in to greet our guests. Dom has had a tremendous first season of cricket with Somerset making his first-class debut against Pakistan in July. We look forward to welcoming him back to Blundell’s in the near future to inspire our current pupils.

Blundell's Golf Day 27th August 2015

We held this year’s Charity Golf Day a little up country to try and encourage some of our Blundell’s community to join us who live around the M4 corridor. We were delighted that we had a good turnout of teams and that our regular supporters based in Devon also came along to participate. Competition as ever was fierce, but enjoyable with a beautiful day (bar the one torrential downpour) which sent all undercover whilst it passed over.

With all teams equipped with a buggy, we had a two tee start after competitors enjoyed a quick Bacon Roll to see them on their way. After a gruelling five-hour round for the majority, all deserved a restorative drink followed by a three course meal before the raffle and award ceremony. We are very grateful to our sponsors, National West Chem and Westford Mechanical Ltd.

While enjoying a glass of port we were delighted to hear from James Bullock (P 1981-86 and Current Governor) about the recent achievements of many of our pupils and the health of the School in general. Notably, that Blundell’s has Devon representation at every sport at every level, including the captain of the Devon U15 girls’ cricket team, a very popular and growing sport at school amongst the girls. Moreover, that a group of our pupils are current National English Speaking Union public speaking champions. We also heard about the fantastic refurbishments, which took place over the summer in Gorton House and North Close.

1970s & 1980s Gaudy Reception 6th September 2014

Blundell’s School hosted its 1970s & 1980s Gaudy Reception on Saturday 6th September. The day started off with a Guest Morning for prospective Old Blundellian Families. The Families were greeted by The Head, Nicola Huggett who spoke about the many important changes that have taken place at Blundell’s since the 70s, albeit whilst ensuring the founding ethos of the School has remained untouched.

70's and 80's gaudy, September 2014 70's and 80's gaudy, September 2014

The Lunch Reception commenced with a drinks reception in Big School with over 80 Old Blundellians & Former Masters, including their partners and children. We were treated to an wonderful buffet lunch by our new Chef, many of you delighted to see that ‘baked beans’ were not on the menu as they may well have been back in the 70s & 80s!

Nick Swarbrick (Master 64-97, Housemaster of Westlake 68-80, Second Master 76-97 & Governor 00-06) was a delightful Guest Speaker and recanted stories of his time at Blundell’s over the past 42 years. It was clear from his speech that although many things have changed since his time as Master, Blundell’s has continued to remain one of the strongest Schools in the South West. Mike Sampson the School Archivist also laid out an impressive exhibition from the 70s & 80s allowing Old Blundellians to show their families photographs from their time at School.

We were delighted to have Former Master Charles Noon provide an exclusive tour of Blundell’s. He provided comedic insights into the antics of former pupils, emphasising the importance of gunpowder and penknives into the daily routine!

The day concluded with an Afternoon Tea in the Beale Centre; offering the opportunity for Old Blundellians to further recall their time spent at the School, before saying their goodbyes to one another. We do hope that many of you have made promises to remain in touch.

BBC Any Questions?21st February 2014

Around 400 people enjoyed the live broadcast of the BBC Radio 4 programme Any Questions? from Blundell's on Friday (21st February 2014). Any Questions panel with Blundellians studying politicsThe panel of the Secretary of State for Scotland Alistair Carmichael, Conservative backbench MP Nadhim Zahawi, New Statesman columnist Laurie Penny and Labour backbench MP Frank Field, was chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby. The BBC was impressed by the range of questions submitted during the evening in advance of the broadcast and one of the ten people selected to put their question to the panel was former Master Charles Noon who received a round of applause from many of the audience when he was called forward (unfortunately, time ran out before he could put his question 'Is the country caught between a cruel housing shortage or the bursting of a housing bubble?' to the panel). Once on air, the panel debated several topics of the day including Kiev, Scottish independence and whether it was a good idea to put a calorie count on bottles of wine!

Ten sixth formers, several of whom are studying politics, helped at the event and were able to talk to the panel and Jonathan Dimbleby, and gain an insight into public life as well as into broadcasting.

Germany Dinner 17th January 2014

Germany Dinner 2014Blundell’s has been fortunate to educate a number of international pupils including those from Germany and for this reason we decided it was time to host another Germany Dinner in Dusseldorf. Over 30 Old Blundellians, Current & Past Parents attended the reception which was kindly organized by Christian Busch (SH 1988-89). Our guests were welcomed by Mrs Huggett and she gave an exciting overview of the events and projects taking place this year at Blundell’s. Following Mrs Huggett’s welcome we were treated to a delicious dinner and many of our guests took the time to reminisce about old memories of their time at School and of course meet new friends from the Community.
