This years’ Spring Concert 2023, Blundell’s on the Sea, was a sensational treat for the sell-out audience as we journeyed across the ocean with Dr Leaman at the helm, stopping at various musical islands along the way to hear iconic music from film, TV and the classical repertoire with our fabulous Orchestra and Jazz Band. In the second half, we were joined by our guests from six Tiverton primary schools and three other local schools to perform the energetic and brilliantly composed Ahoy! by Alexandre L’Estrange, conducted with energy and joy by Andrew Johnson. It was an honour to welcome the composer and his band to the concert. It is not every day, after all, that pupils get to share the stage with an internationally acclaimed composer. To have so many young people join us for our first Tiverton Big Sing since the pandemic was a real delight and just the start of a partnership that brings the joy of music and singing to all Tiverton children, regardless of background and experience. With 275 musicians taking part on their instruments or with their voices it was incredibly moving to see so much joy for their music making on display. The extras all contributed hugely to the event, including a welcome from the UN ambassador for the oceans, Lewis Pugh, the catering team providing a fish and chips feast, and OB Jamie White creating a spectacular large painting during the show. Enjoying playing and hearing music is a life-affirming delight and you would be hard pushed to find a more enjoyable production than Blundell’s on the Sea.
