Physical Education

Physical Education at Blundell’s complements the games programme and enables pupils to participate in a broad range of both individual and team activities; from Gymnastics to Handball and Swimming to Badminton.

Opportunities are provided both practically and theoretically for pupils to develop skills and knowledge related to performance. Pupils learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and life-long participation, with all pupils in Year 10 being given a full induction into the school’s fitness suite. Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to perform, coach and officiate, whilst building on their leadership, communication and teamwork skills in a fun and dynamic environment.

GCSE and A-Level PE enable pupils to experience a truly multi-disciplinary subject. The varied and challenging course content exposes pupils to sociological elements, such as technology and drugs in sport, and scientific areas such as anatomy, exercise physiology and biomechanics of movement. Performing in their chosen activity at A-Level and in three activities at GCSE provides enjoyment, whilst the opportunity to analyse and reflect on their own performance is one that pupils relish. BTEC Sport offers a more modular approach to learning, with pupils investigating the impact of physiology on performance, as well as the contribution training programmes and diet play in establishing a healthy lifestyle. All courses provide an insight into the role psychology plays in performance across the ability spectrum and is an area that Blundellians are readily able to relate to their own sporting experiences. Past pupils have gone on to study a wide range of subjects at many highly respected universities.
