Psychology

"Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve." - Erich Fromm

Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour and over the last century, it has grown into a multi-disciplinary field which has become one of the most popular degree courses in the country. From the early 20th century transatlantic debate between Watson’s behaviourism and Freud’s influential, yet flawed psychodynamic approach, through to contemporary research in cognitive neuroscience, Psychology A-Level introduces pupils to a range of topics addressing how and why we do what we do and think what we think. During the course, pupils will cover some of the core aspects of psychological research including memory, obedience and parent-child attachment, as well as an exploration of atypical behaviour such as criminality. It will undoubtedly challenge, fascinate and provoke both philosophically and scientifically minded individuals as they consider the deeper questions of what makes us human.
