Music

Music at Blundell's is a thriving centre of excellence through ambitious concert programming, passionate and expert teaching and dynamic and forward-thinking opportunities.

The opportunities for music making at Blundell’s are second to none. Our pupils perform in the world’s best venues including Carnegie Hall, New York and St John’s Smith Square. They work with the country’s finest musicians, including the London Chamber Orchestra and with internationally acclaimed composers (Ola Gjeilo, Alec Roth, Graham Ross). Many of our pupils go on to read Music at top universities and conservatoires as academics, composers or performers. We regularly have successful Choral Scholars to Oxbridge.

We have a popular and high achieving music community, with over 350 music lessons a week and a third of the pupils in the school are in one of our orchestral or choral ensembles. Many of these pupils go on to achieve distinctions in Diploma and Grade 8 Music qualifications. We have a forward thinking, passionate, highly skilled and diverse staff who seek the very best musical opportunities for our pupils. These include trips and visits to major orchestras, chamber, jazz and pop and rock performers, with visiting professionals in all fields of music to supplement the curriculum.

Music is very well resourced, with a specialist music centre, including our own recording studio, 12 practice rooms, a range of Steinway pianos, a 3-manual organ, a huge array of instruments and a vast listening library complete with scores.

Music forms a very important part of the lives of many Blundellians. Whether their enjoyment lies in classical performance, the choir or a band they have formed with their friends, Blundell’s supports and encourages musicianship in all its forms.

Watch Blundell’s Senior Music Scholars perform Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns, followed by the full Senior Orchestra performing Smetana’s Vlatava, in a concert from October 2021.
